Claire Thompson speaks at Memorial University in St John’s, Newfoundland.
International Development Week (IDW) is an opportunity for Canada’s development community to showcase its work. In support of IDW’s 20th anniversary and activities, IDRC staff recently participated in a number of events at Canadian universities across the country.
  • On January 25, Markus Gottsbacher from IDRC’s Peace, Conflict and Development program spoke at the University of Ottawa about IDRC’s experience in Haiti and the challenges and opportunities for development research in the wake of the devastating January earthquake.

  • Andy Knight, IDRC Governor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta introduced noted philosopher Thomas Pogge of Yale University at an evening lecture on February 5, during U of A’s International Week activities. Pogge spoke about the persistence of severe global poverty in poorer countries, the devastating costs in terms of lives lost, and what steps can be taken to eradicate poverty. Earlier that week, Knight was part of a panel debating the implications of Private Member's Bill C-300, which would require Canadian energy companies to follow Canada’s environmental best practices and human rights standards while working in developing countries.

  • Jean-Marc Fleury, executive director of the World Federation of Science Journalists, visited Québec City’s Laval’s University February 8, where he shared his experiences as a former director of IDRC’s Communications Division.

  • Claire Thompson outlined IDRC’s Canadian Partnerships and Awards programs to students at Memorial University in St John’s, Newfoundland, on February 9.

  • On February 10, Simon Carter and Mary O’Neill of the Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) program, a joint initiative of IDRC and the UK Department for International Development, travelled to the universities of Toronto and Dalhousie, respectively, to speak to audiences about the key challenges and IDRC’s contribution to climate change adaptation strategies in Africa.

  • Aku Kwamie of the Governance, Equity, and Health program participated in a panel during Queen’s University’s Africa Days on February 10 and spoke about IDRC’s support to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare services.

  • Naser Faruqui, director of IDRC’s Innovation, Policy and Science program area spoke about water scarcity, climate change, and food security to University of Manitoba students on February 11.

  • Stephen Tyler, former IDRC staff member and author of Co-management of Natural Resources: Local Learning for Poverty Reduction, part of IDRC’s in_focus collection,  spoke at the University of Vancouver Island in Nanaimo, BC, on February 11 on the new collaborative measures that are improving livelihoods for the rural poor while protecting their local ecosystems.

  • Sarah Earl of the Centre’s Evaluation Unit led a workshop on Outcome Mapping at Brock University on February 12.
