Anti-Retroviral Therapy: A Powerful Tool for Coping with HIV/AIDS

South Africa has been hard hit by HIV/AIDS: more than 20% of the population has HIV, and 13% of all the people in the world living with the disease are found in South Africa.
 
In 2003 in response to the epidemic, South Africa’s government began providing anti-retroviral therapy (ART), which can dramatically reduce mortality, and prolong and improve the lives of HIV patients.
 
IDRC has been working with researchers and policymakers in the South African province of Free State as it implements and evaluates its ART rollout.
